St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN); Dominican Republic national Alexander Diaz has pleaded not guilty to murder in the December 2014 stabbing death of Pabel Santana.

At the start of the April Criminal Assizes of the Nevis Circuit on Tuesday (Apr 4), Diaz, represented by Dr. Henry Browne QC, went before  Her Ladyship Justice Lorraine Williams.

Justice Williams set a May 2 case management hearing for his matter.

Diaz and Santana had an altercation at a bar on December 21, 2014 and Diaz, who was 26 years old at the time allegedly stabbed his fellow Dominicano. A few weeks after the homicide Diaz was caught attempting to flee Nevis on a fishing boat destined for St. Maarten. 

Another murder accused going before the court was 23-year-old Reece Walters of Cotton Ground, the former hotel worker accused of strangling 15 year-old Shante Claxton in September of 2014.

Walters, who was appearing before the high court for the first time since being charged, did not enter a plea at Tuesday’s proceedings. The defendant was unable to secure an attorney and the Judge assigned attorney Robelto Hector as his counsel. A case management hearing was set for May 2.

Keon Moore, charged with attempted murder, will also have a case management hearing on May 2.

Trial dates were set for several traversed matters.

A male and female charged with rape and unlawful carnal knowledge will go on trial on May 2. 

A man charged with rape and kidnapping is scheduled to go on trial on April 24.

Delano Browne, charged with four counts of armed robbery for the May 2013 hold up of a group of persons outside Yachtsman Grill will be retried in April. Browne already went on trial for the offences in April of last year, but was released on bail after the trial ended in a hung jury.

Ibal Tyson and Franchette Davis, charged with housebreaking and larceny are set to go on trial on April 24. 

Shantez Mintos of Butlers Village is set to be retried on April 5 for unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition  after he was found not guilty at a November 2016 trial.
