St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN); The St. Kitts Music Festival Committee has always been challenged by budgetary constraints with respect to booking acts for the three night event, and this year, the Committee had to work with even less money.
This was confirmed by head of the Music Festival Artiste Selection Committee Jonel Powell.
“The budget is actually smaller than the one we had last year for the 20th anniversary; so we can only bring who we can afford.”
He said finances and competition with the BET Awards continue to pose a problem for the Committee when trying to contract artistes for the festival.
“The types of acts we can actually bring here are limited by availability and affordability and so we can only operate within the budgetary constraints. Also in terms of youthful acts- urban American Hip Hop acts- we are competing with the BET Awards on the same weekend, which has over the years been a problem, and has been a problem for us in terms of availability of acts this year.”
Powell says this year’s mix of artistes for the St. Kitts Music Festival, which includes local, regional and international acts, caters to all genres.
“We try to cater to all demographics and so you’ll see persons who we think represent those different demographics, youth, the more mature crowd, the international crowd and regional crowd. We think we’ve been able to find a good mix in that respect.”
When WINN FM asked if the possibility exists for any additions to the lineup before the June 22 start of the festival, Powell said while the recently announced slate of artistes forms the complete lineup for the 21st anniversary of the Music Festival, he would not rule out the chances of “one or two surprises” before that time.
