St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Eric Evelyn, Permanent Secretary in the NIA’ Ministry of Agriculture has been elected by the Constituency Group for St. Georges to be the candidate for the incumbent Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) party in the next Nevis Island Assembly Elections.
WINN confirmed with the Chairman of the constituency group that they held an election on Tuesday night (Apr 18) to determine who would represent Constituency 3, St. Georges in the Nevis local elections due early in 2018.
Two persons were nominated for candidacy, CCM party Chairman and Cabinet Secretary Stedmon Tross and Mr. Evelyn.
According to the Constituency Group Chairman, Evelyn received 16 votes and Tross received 4 votes. The Chairman said other names had been talked about on the ground level but only two persons were nominated.
He clarified however that Evelyn’s election as the candidate for St. Georges will not become official until it is ratified by the CCM party executive. It would then be announced at the Party’s convention, which according to their constitution, must be held before July of this year.
If sanctioned by the CCM, Evelyn will replace Premier Vance Amory, who has reportedly signaled his retirement from active politics in the near future. Evelyn would be facing the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) candidate Cory Tyson.
Evelyn has been saluted over the years for his work in community service. In 2011 he was named First Caribbean Bank’s Unsung Hero for St. Kitts and Nevis.
