Shaggy encourages young artists to believe in their work

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN):  Caribbean music icon Shaggy had some words of encouragement for some of the younger artistes performing on the St. Kitts Music Festival on Friday night.

“Everybody up here is special, and there’s a reason why they special.  If they weren't special then everybody would have the gift that they have,” he said, speaking at the artiste’s press conference on Friday morning.

“Not many people have the ability to spot a diamond in the rough, so anything that you all are doing, do it and believe in it, because you are the artist.  You can have managers, you can have all bunch of people around who’s gonna sit down there and tell you what they think, but one of them are the artist and none of them have that special gift, to see something before it happens.”

Shaggy called for greater international recognition of reggae.

“When you look at major stations that are Arbitron rating stations they are zero reggae stations. You have maybe a reggae programme for maybe an hour or two on Sunday, so think about it, that a reggae artist has to do music ten times better than the average genre and work ten times harder than the average artist because the playing field is not level.”

The artist’s lineup for the second night of the Music Festival will see up and coming teen star Dejour, followed by Dagah, Charles Emmanuel, Christopher Martin, Konshens, and Shaggy with reggae icon Beres Hammond brining the curtains down on the show.
