St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): St. Kitts and Nevis has a new Director of Public Prosecution Mr. Travers S. Sinanan. On Tuesday at the opening of the new law year, he has sounded the warning that there will be vigorous changes in the way the Public Prosecution does its business. “The Office of the DPP can assure the legal fraternity that there are going to be continuing robust practices, vigorous changes in the manner in which it conducts its business. To that I will be held accountable,” Mr. Sinanan said. He said there will be greater accountability in which the office’s cases work evaluation and review. “The decision to prosecute or not will be carefully scrutinized and responsibly exercised underlined by professional integrity because the buck stops with me,” Mr. Sinanan said.
The new DPP assured that the he will now shy away from controversial, sensitive or high profile matters and fundamental rights of citizens will be respected. “The fundamental rights of the individual citizenry will be respected against the backdrop of the welfare of the collective many,” Mr. Sinanan said. “Individual freedom or human rights do not start when someone is arrested. They are in existence constantly. These chambers under my watch and leadership will guard them jealously.”
Mr. Sinanan thanked his predecessor Pauline Hendrickson and acting DPP Rhonda Nisbett Browne for their work prior to his appointment and promised to vigorously observe the code for prosecutors. “I say this to the legal fraternity, to the non-criminal practitioners I wish you a successful term, to the criminal defense practitioners a considerably less successful term,” he said to the laughter of the audience in the court room.
