Black rights leader optimistic about reparations movement

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The reparations conference held in St. Vincent and the Grenadines last week is a positive step to energize the reparations movement in the region. That is according to Omowale Clay, a representative of the December 12th Movement International Secretariat, a Black Human Rights organization based in New York. “Timing is everything. I think this effort is historic in terms of it being the first time it has happened but more importantly it is the question of regaining the momentum and put us on the offensive in terms of organizing and agitating and first educating our people (on reparations),” Clay told WINN FM in an interview.

Mr. Clay disclosed that the meeting in St. Vincent, the first since the CARICOM Heads of Government agreed to pursue reparations in July, provided for the setting up of a regional commission on reparations headed by University of the West Indies Professor Sir Hillary Beckles. The Caribbean Reparation Commission will seek to advance the region’s position on the injustices suffered as a result of the slave trade.
