SWMC acquires a baler

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The Solid Waste Management Corporation on Tuesday officially received a baler at a ceremony on the sanitary landfill in Conaree. The baler will be used to compact garbage for storage on the landfill in a bid to create space on the landfill that has already passed its lifespan. SWMC General Manager Alphonso Bridgewater disclosed how the baler will be used on Talking Trash Tuesday morning. He explained that with the baler, the garbage will be packed like cylindrical stacks of wheat. One baler he said could hold 130 pounds of garbage.

“What actually happens, it compacts, compresses the garbage and spits it out in this particular bale so it provides the opportunity to get a little more space (on landfill) by stacking them,” Bridgewater said. “It provides an opportunity to get rid of the oxygen within it so the prospect of self ignition is completely reduced. You get away from termites because all that odour and smell is gone,” he added.  He said the stacks of garbage can be used if the waste to energy is pursued in St. Kitts.

Officials from Naanovo, the company seeking to pursue a waste to energy project in St. Kitts assisted in acquiring the baler. Mr. Bridgewater believes the equipment will be beneficial to St. Kitts and Nevis especially as it relates to landfill fires.
