LIAT suspending flights to Nevis during Winter period

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): LIAT will be suspending services to Nevis effective December 3 to January 14. According to Deputy Premier and Minister of Tourism Mark Brantley, the administration was informed of the impending suspension of services by LIAT to the Vance W. Amory International Airport via letter from LIAT’s management. This, he said in a press release has prompted the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) to actively seek an alternative carrier that would fill the void created during that period.

Mr. Brantley explained that a letter dated November 1, 2013 from LIAT indicated changes to that the flight schedule which the airline said would negatively impact their service into Nevis. He said as a result of the fleet transition currently underway and limited resources they are unable to provide a service into Nevis for the period of winter, 2013, which will commence on the December 3rd 2013 and will continue on to January 14th 2014.

Brantley said the news of the suspension was not good for Nevis, since airlift into the island was critical to its development and the pull out would come at the worst possible time. In the meantime, the NIA began speaking to SGV Air, Fly Montserrat and BVI Air as well as Tradewind to facilitate traffic from and to Antigua during the period of the LIAT flight suspensions. He said the Antigua-Nevis/Nevis-Antigua leg being served by LIAT is very important and it is now to the government to get alternative for LIAT for Antigua flights.  This development is a stark contrast to the plans of the Nevis Tourism Authority. Just over a month ago, recently appointed Director of the Nevis Tourism Authority Greg Phillip stressed the importance of LIAT to Nevis and for the need to attract more LIAT flights to the island.
