Over 2500 persons under PEP

 

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): There are over 2500 persons on the People Employment Program (PEP), according to PEP project manager Geoffrey Hanley. During PEP Fes on Friday where the various disciplines of the program were on display for the public, Mr. Hanley told WINN that the first two phases of the program have been completed and as the program approaches its first anniversary, there are plans to unveil phase 3, which involves entrepreneurship. 

Mr. Hanley could not say how long the program would last but referred to the prime minister’s announcement of his intention to make PEP a permanent venture. PEP, introduced in December of 2012 has provided hundreds of people, most of whom were previously unemployed with job attachments where they receive on the job training and are paid a weekly stipend. The program has been criticized by the opposition as a political ploy by the prime minister ahead of impending elections. However, proponents of the program including participants have said it has provided them with opportunities that previously would have not been available. The program is supported by the Sugar Industry Diversification Fund (SIDF).
