St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): St. Kitts’ commitment to becoming a green and sustainable destination has led tourism authorities to partner with sustainable travel international, a company based in the US that helps destinations to develop and implement environmental protection solutions. Kathleen Pessolano, Senior Director, Destinations at Sustainable Travel International spoke to tourism stakeholders earlier this week during a tourism marketing meeting at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort about what it hopes to achieve with this new sustainable tourist, thrust for St. Kitts. “At the end of the day it’s about balance. Nobody, especially the minister and ministry are trying to stifle growth…it’s about growing in a way that balances the needs of industry and the needs of economic growth in the place, with the ends of the people, the community, the cultural heritage and the natural assets which are at the end of the day your strongest assets,” Pessolano said.
Ms. Pessolano suggests that there is a growing demand for sustainable tourism of which St. Kitts is in a position to attract. She made reference to the solar panel farm at the RLB International Airport as an initiative to creating a sustainable destination. “The prime minister has said that a goal for St. Kitts and Nevis is to become a green economy and as the minister said it’s an important first step,” the travel official said.
Meanwhile, Ms. Pessolano disclosed that St. Kitts is among destinations selected to participate in the global sustainable tourism council early adopter program. She said the global sustainable tourism council is the leading standard setting organization on sustainability in travel. “They have just released their new sets of criteria which are guidelines that they suggest destinations should have in place,” she said. “St. Kitts was the first destination in the Caribbean and one of less than 15 in the world to pilot these criteria.”
