Two die as boat overturns at Port Zante

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN):  Two men lost their lives Wednesday afternoon, when a boat they were on capsized in at Basseterre’s Port Zante just after 5:00 o’clock.

The bodies of SCASA employee Rudolph Dowelll of Ponds Extension and Maxwell Browne of New Road, an employee of Horsfords, were retrieved by local divers from the water in the berthing area were the vessel capsized. 

Reports reaching WINN FM indicate that the boat, which was assisting with the unberthing process of a cruise vessel, overturned while the ship was pulling out of port.  Eyewitnesses say that the ship either clipped the smaller vessel or it was struck by a rope.

A police press release says only that “both men were performing their regular job duties when the incident occurred.”

Two cruise ships that visited the island for the day, Royal Caribbean’s ‘Independence of the Seas’ and the’Silhouette,’ remained in port as the coast guard vessel scoured the area in search for the men.

As the light began to fade, anxious onlookers, some believed to be family members, screamed and cried as the men’s bodies were retrieved.

The Police, Coast Guard and the Air and Sea Ports Authority are jointly investigating an incident.  

SCASPA has scheduled a press conference for this afternoon (Thursday, April 3, 2014).
