Domestic workers rep calls for less restrictions to free movement

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): A representative for domestic and household workers in Trinidad and Tobago is calling for CARICOM to take the appropriate measures to ensure the free movement of domestic workers across the region. In 2007 and 2009, CARICOM leaders ratified the free movement of domestic workers and artisans as part of a measure to facilitate free movement of labour in the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

Domestic workers have to get called a Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) certificate from a reputable body in order to be recognized as domestic workers. Most countries in CARICOM do not have the mechanisms to issue CVQs which is stalling the process of free movement of domestic workers. Ida Le Blanc, General Secretary for the National Union of Domestic Employees in Trinidad and Tobago was a guest this week on WINN FM’s Voices program.
