Former Caribbean politician calls for church to be more active

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The church’s role in society goes beyond the spiritual, but also addressing social ills from the pulpit and in communities, according to Joan Purcell, former President of the Senate in Grenada and author of the book A Vision For Change.

Ms. Purcell, a guest on a recent edition of WINN FM’s Voices programme is a proponent of the coexistence of the church and state and said the church in the Caribbean has failed to fulfill its social obligation to the community.

Meanwhile, in response to a caller’s question on the church’s role in slavery in the Caribbean, Ms. Purcell suggested that missionaries to the Caribbean preached a half gospel that did not represent the full truth of the Bible.
