Fishermen cautioned on fishing in Statia channel

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The marine management area policy in St. Kitts and Nevis has not yet been ratified, but areas of fishing priority and conservation have already been earmarked, according to Mark Williams, Head of the Marine Resources Department. Mr. Williams listed the areas for commercial fishing and conservation, which includes the channel between St. Eustatius and St. Kitts.

Over the years there have disputes between local fishers and the Dutch authorities regarding fishing in the St. Eustatius Channel. Fishermen in recent years have been held by the Dutch coast guard for allegedly illegally fishing in Dutch waters without permission. This is a problem which still exists, Mr. Williams noted that steps are being taken to address that problem.
