Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis, December 10 (WINN) - Elections will not be held in St. Kitts and Nevis before the end of the year. Parliament will automatically dissolved on December 16th, five years after its first sitting following the 2004 General Elections. Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas will then have to 90 days in which to call the election. In an interview with BBC Caribbean on Tuesday, the Prime Minister said he would not set a date until after the holiday season.
Speaking to the BBC, Dr. Douglas said, “Parliament can still dissolve before the 16th. The Prime Minister can ask his Excellency the Governor-General to dissolve Parliament at any time and so we can have the elections anytime after the dissolution, but I am one of those who believe that people should be allowed to have their Christmas uninterrupted. Christmas is a time for unity among family members and so I would not want, at any rate, to be disruptive in what has been a very long established family tradition and so I would say safely that the elections would be in the New Year.”
A recent CADRES poll conducted in St. Kitts indicates that some 62% of persons interviewed said that they are ready for a general election this year while 30% said they would prefer to have the election in the New Year.
The survey was conducted in St Kitts during the last two weeks in November. It is based on 800 interviews conducted in all eight constituencies, and is designed to achieve a margin of error of +/- 5% at the national level. The CADRES poll contained no questions about the desire of Kittitians to have boundaries changes as was reported by Government officials last week.. |
