St. Kitts & Nevis – February 7, 2010: In a three and a half hour ceremony on Sunday evening at the Warner Park cricket stadium, the Cabinet of the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis was sworn in and the various portfolios conferred on the respective ministers. The highlight of the evening was the swearing-in of NRP parliamentarian for Nevis 11, Patrice Nisbett as Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs. This is the first time a Nevis representative has been appointed to the federal cabinet, even though the St. Kitts party already had a majority to form the government.
Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas now holds the Finance portfolio previously held by Dr. Timothy Harris, as well as the portfolios of sustainable development and human resource development. Sam Condor remains as Deputy Prime Minister and now has Foreign affairs, National Security, Labour, Immigration and Social Security as his other portfolios. Dr. Timothy Harris Minister is now senior minister, minister of international trade, industry, commerce, agriculture, consumer affairs and constituency empowerment and marine resources. Dr. Earl Asim Martin remains with Public Works and is also minister of Housing, Energy and Utilities. Marcella Liburd, the only woman minister in the cabinet was allotted Health, Social Services, Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs. Newcomer Glen Phillip was conferred Youth Empowerment, Sports, Information Technology and Telecommunications and Post portfolios. In addition to the information portfolio allotted to him in the previous administration, Senator Nigel Carty is now also the minister of education. Senator Ricky Skerritt is minister of Tourism and International Transport. In his national address at the ceremony, Prime Minister Denzil Douglas, among other things, announced the appointment of Dr. Norgen Wilson as advisor to the Ministry of National Security and Immigration and Cedric Liburd as advisor to the Ministry of Tourism. Both were Labour party candidates who lost their seat in the January 25th general elections. The prime minister also appointed former Attorney General, Dennis Merchant as general counsel to the federal government.
