A collection of pictures of the effects of the deadly disease affecting palm trees in St. Kitts sent to WINN FM by the Communications Officer in the Department of Agriculture, Eric Browne. Officials are still trying to determine what the disease is. The two varieties that show some level of tolerance to the disease are the Malayan variety (dwarf) and the Maypan variety. They are named among the pictures.

The theme for this year’s Children’s Parade was ‘St. Kitts-Nevis, Culture and Future’. There were five sections: Agriculture and Self-Reliance, Carnival Masquerade, Industry and Commerce, Information Technology and Soca Music.

Thousands of revelers danced around the town on Monday during J'ouvert on Monday (December 26th). Participating Jouvert Troupes were the Biggest Loser Troupe, Shiggidy Shack Winn Jammers, Xtreme Jouvert Troupe, Stay with the Best Carib Beer Jouvert Troupe, Red Devils and Love Parade.

The Mighty Takeover was crowned the Power Soca Monarch for his explosive and crowd-pleasing performance of "Insane." Shakki Starfire was crowned the Groovy Soca Monarch for her energetic and attention-grabbing performance of the popular "Party, Plenty" which she delivered on stilts dressed as a Moko Jumbie.

Queen Anastasia made history when she became the first performer to win the female calypso crown five times, and was the first to win the monarchy two years in a row. Newcomer and former National Carnival Queen Gloria “Queeny G” Esdaille was named first runner up. Veteran Calypsonian Singing Jackie was named second runner up. The third runner up spot went to another newcomer Lady Diva.

In the Spirit of Christmas is an initiative of the Ministry of Culture to highlight the celebration of Christmas during the Carnival season. Performances include musical renditions by choirs and musicians, as well as dancing and other artistic expressions.

The Soca Monarch Semi-Finals were held on December 2nd at Carnival Village. There were two segments this year - Groovy and Power. The event was held for the first time last year with one round and one segment.
