St. Kitts and Nevis (Curtis Morton): It’s official. The Charlestown Secondary School cricket team is the 2013 Giant Malt High Schools’ champions for 2013. This was accomplished at the ET Willet Park on Wednesday 20th March. That’s when the CSS team engaged the Washington Archibald High School team for the coveted trophy.
There was a slight delay to the day’s play due to a sharp shower of rain but grounds man JABAL Tyson and his assistants, worked overtime to get the square into playable condition. The CSS team took the field without the services of one of their top players; Ross Powell who it is understood was out for disciplinary reasons.
The Washington Archibald team batted first and led by their ace batsman and national player, Jeremiah Louis, eventually got to 140 for 6 in their allotted 30 overs. The CSS team in response got off to a splendid start with Saeed Williams (son of Stuart Williams) and Philo Wallace (son of Raphael Wallace) who was promoted up the order in the absence of Powell, combining in an exciting opening partnership of 85 runs. Williams eventually perished when he closed the face of the bat too early in an attempted flick shot off the bowling of the aggressive Louis and was easily caught by the wicketkeeper. He however arguably played the shot of the day when he responded to a quick bouncer from Louis with a savage pull shot which landed just one bounce inside the midwicket boundary.
Wallace went on to get to an undefeated half century and was ably assisted by an unlikely cameo from the normally sedate Bervis Burke who bludgeoned a quick fire 18 not out.

Immediately after the game, there was a brief presentation ceremony chaired by Vernon Springer who indicated that a selection panel will soon be selecting a 25 man squad from the tournament for an upcoming regional touranment. Also addressing the youngsters was President of the Nevis Cricket Association, Keith Scarborough who reminded the youngsters to make discipline a part of their way of life. Sponsor’s rep, Noah Mills congratulated the two teams and promised the two star players of the day in Louis and Wallace, a case of Giant malt each.
