Nevis Edges Out St. Kitts In Tense Thriller

St. Kitts and Nevis: It was all over by the shouting.  The local fans at the ET Willet Park on Thursday 27th June had generally resigned themselves to the inevitable.  The St.Kitts under 19 team seemed to be coasting to their second consecutive win against their Nevisian counterparts. However, there was some drama left yet in the match.

The St.Kitts under 19’s batted first and fared a lot better than they did the previous day, scoring 161 all out in 41.1 of their allotted 50 overs. Trevin Nisbett was the main bowler for Nevis and Captain Dymon Parris who seems destined to keep wicket for the senior Nevis team this year, added two fantastic stumpings to the day’s proceedings.

When Nevis batted, Jeremiah Louis who had tormented them the previous day, seemed destined for a repeat performance, as Nevis was precariously placed on 23 for 3 from 8 overs, with Louis already collecting two scalps.

Then down came the rain and Nevis was provided with a life line, as the officials had to resort to the Duckworth-Lewis method to determine a revise target.  There seemed to be some element of indecision and it only served to highlight the fact that the local administrators of the game need to get several individuals trained in dealing with the complex system.

Eventually, it was determined that Nevis would bat again after the rain ceased with a revised target of 121 from 27 overs.  Captain Dymon Parris despite his golden duck of the previous day, showed his mettle as a leader and as a batsman, as he batted sensibly in crucial partnerships with an aggressive Jevani Tyson who incidentally struck the only maximum in the two match series and another solid effort by all rounder, Clydre Smithen who teamed up with him in a match winning effort of an unbroken 74 run stand. Nevis actually got to the required target with all of two overs to spare.

Summarized scores: St.Kitts 160 all out in 41.1 overs: Jeremiah Louis 29; Lethanio Ferdinand 27; Alexis Bedford 22 Trevin Nisbett 3 for 34; Theron Bussue 2 for 24; Ajai Deonarine 2 for 18; Bervis Burke 1 for 33 and Clydre Smithen 1 for 20

Nevis chasing a revised target of 121 in 27 overs got to 124 for 5 in 23.

Dymon Parris 43*; Clydre Smithen 29*; Jevani Tyson 15

Jeremiah Louis 2 wickets; Venner, Hanley and Hewitt all got 1 wicket each

Nevis winning by 5 wickets on the Duckworth/Lewis method
